Who will be killed

Who will be killed

In an earlier post I asked if the President of the United States have immunity for criminal acts that seem to include murder and insurrection. That is a question before the Supreme Court. They could have just let the finding of the appeals court stand but they decided to take on this ridiculous claim and delay justice.

The ridiculous claim includes the ability to murder at will unless an extremely unlikely impeachment conviction happens. See License to Kill and Rule).

Was Nixon right ?

Was Nixon right ?

During the David Frost interviews former president Richard Nixon said: “Well, when the president does it, that means that it is not illegal”.

Is that really that different from former president Trump’s claim of immunity ?

Was Nixon right then ? Is Trump right now ?

The 2 former Presidents make very similar claims but this has never been decided by a court since the issue has never arisen before. I suspect it will be decided by the Supreme Court either right away or after a delay in the appeals court.

Did the Supreme Court ignore the 9th and 14th Amendments in Roe v Wade ?

Did the Supreme Court ignore the 9th and 14th Amendments in Roe v Wade ?

I read an interesting piece on 14th Amendment of the US Constitution today. It was written Heather Cox Richardson, an American history professor. We’ve only been free subscribers for a week or so and enjoy these articles.

It covers quite a bit but I just wanted to comment on one part of it:

The Handmaid’s Tale

The Handmaid’s Tale

Good article in The Atlantic online.

I INVENTED GILEAD. THE SUPREME COURT IS MAKING IT REAL: I thought I was writing fiction in the Handmaid’s Tale
By Margaret Atwood

Many have read The Handmaid’s Tale and might be interested in hearing what the author has to say about the apparent direction the Supreme Court is taking the people of the United States.

Power is a choice. Choose wisely.

Power is a choice. Choose wisely.

Several months ago I wrote that Republican Senators could, if they chose, be key votes in a different context. See Republicans can choose power.

The same applies now when it seems likely that the Supreme Court will overturn Roe vs Wade. And a bill will be before the Senate to protect abortion rights.

There are people who feel strongly on both sides of this issue. Think clearly and choose wisely. Should religious beliefs of some people restrict the rights of others?

Should we expand the Supreme Court ?

Should we expand the Supreme Court ?

I’ve been doing a bit of reading on this an here are a few articles.

A Republic, If You Can Keep It by Neil Gorsuch

A Republic, If You Can Keep It by Neil Gorsuch

I am presently reading A Republic, If You Can Keep It by Neil Gorsuch. The title comes from Benjamin Franklin who was asked after the Constitutional Convention what type of government we would have. He replied “A Republic, if you can keep it.” Now that the republic has lasted several centuries the question is still whether we can keep that republic. This book is Justice Gorsuch’s answer.

Biden Rule, republican alterative fact

Biden Rule, republican alterative fact

The Biden Rule has come up again in discussing a potential Supreme Court nomination. There is no Biden Rule. Republicans just made it a rule to justify a political trick.

Kavanaugh confirmed but did he lie or was he libeled ?

Kavanaugh confirmed but did he lie or was he libeled ?

The Senate Republicans were in a big rush to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. As I said before, they proceeded quickly –

Kavanaugh FBI investigation was a farce

Kavanaugh FBI investigation was a farce

We are not yet sure of the best term for the FBI investigation into possible sexual assault and attempted rape by a young Brett Kavanaugh. Some actually think a history of such behavior and then lying about it would be a bad trait on a Supreme Court Justice. But what do they know! The confirmation marches on with Republican support.

Kavanaugh hearings: what are they afraid of?

Kavanaugh hearings: what are they afraid of?

The Senate Republicans seem to be in a big rush to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. They want the Kavanaugh hearings to proceed to a vote as soon as possible.

So quickly they do not have time to let the Democrats see 90% of the relevant documents.

So quickly we will not hear more about his years in the Bush administration and possible perjury before the Senate.

So quickly they rather not let the FBI investigate an attempted rape he has been accused of.

Advertising for Supreme Court nominees

Advertising for Supreme Court nominees

Is advertising for Supreme Court nominees a new thing? I was very surprised to see ads for Judge Gorsuch when he was nominated. Now I see ads for Judge Kavanaugh and I am still saddened but less suprised.

Prodeath Judge Kavanaugh

Prodeath Judge Kavanaugh

Judge Kavanaugh may be the next Justice on the Supreme Court if this rushed and deeply flawed confirmation process continues. But he really needs to clarify his stances on the prolife/prodeath issue.

For example, President Trump has promised to appoint Justices who will overturn Roe vs. Wade and Brett Kavanaugh’s history seem to indicate he will not only repeal a woman’s right to an abortion but also reduce access to contraception.

Kavanaugh madness and rush to the Supreme Court

Kavanaugh madness and rush to the Supreme Court

The rush to confirm President Trump’s nominee for the Supreme Court vacancy Brett Kavanaugh continues. Seems to me there are several reasons to stop or delay but Republican leadership is committed to this folly. I hope enough Senators see a problem to stop this Kavanaugh madness.

Biden rule was made by Republicans

Biden rule was made by Republicans

There is no Biden Rule. Republicans just made it a rule to justify a political trick.

This is pretty ancient history. We are going back at least 2 years since this “rule” was invoked, and then all the way to 1992 to see its roots. So why am I thinking about this today?
