Will Senator Menendez resign ?
Update on Senator Menendez: national security.

He has given up his chairmanship of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. But he still sits on the committee.

John Fetterman, the first Senator to call for Senator Menendez to resign reminds us:

Senator Menendez is entitled to the presumption of innocence under our system, but he is not entitled to continue to wield influence over national policy, especially given the serious and specific nature of the allegations.

It is the right thing to do.

Senator Menendez has already given reasons for many to think he should resign. Now he gives us another.

I have written about him twice:

He has given up his chairmanship of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. But now that an additional charge of failing to register under the Foreign Agents Registration Act is filed, the case is even stronger for his resignation from Senate.

Update on Senator Menendez: national security

Just Security has just published a new article on the Senator Menendez national security risk. It starts like this:

The recent indictment of U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) reads like the script of a B crime movie: A politician, three New Jersey businessmen, a shady trucking business, and envelopes and a safe deposit box stuffed with cash and gold bars. But the most important thru-line in the narrative isn’t the criminal charges. Rather, it is the national security threat raised by the espionage and counterintelligence concerns which run throughout the 39-page document. In sum, the government of Egypt–with whom the United States has an ostensible “critical defense partnership”–appears to have recruited the powerful Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. The indictment explicitly lists five ways Menendez has already compromised U.S. national security, and implicitly reveals one ongoing threat Menendez poses as long as he continues to hold his current position.

John Fetterman, the first Senator to call for Senator Menendez to resign put it this way:

He should choose an honorable exit and resign.

Librarian of National Intelligence

Librarian of National Intelligence

The recent outbreak of classified documents found in in politicians’ homes makes me think we really need a Librarian of National Intelligence (LoNI). Libraries are pretty good at keeping track of their books.

I find ridiculous that our National Intelligence agencies do not keep records on what they have and who checked it out. Perhaps they do but recent history suggests otherwise.

I’ve been a fan of Just Security for their new coverage of the January 6, 2021 attack on the United States Capitol and other issues. Today they published When, Where and For What Mar-a-Lago Crimes Should Garland Indict Trump? .

Special master but it seems Trump caused the problem

Special master but it seems Trump caused the problem

Toward the end of my post Republican idiots and special master I speculated about former President Trump delaying the investigation by requesting a review by a special master.

But Judge Cannon has ruled in favor the the former President.

It seems to me that the problem of personal papers, some of which may include some documents with potential attorney-client privilege, is former President Trump’s fault since he is the one who mixed these papers with the stolen national defense and classified documents. Also, if he had returned these documents when asked and then lied when subpoenaed this problem could have been avoided.

It also seems to me that the risk to our national security is much more important than any damage to the former President’s reputation by any accidental revelations.

Is it 1984 yet? American Corporate Security State

I read The Rise of the American Corporate Security State: Six Reasons to Be Afraid by Beatrice Edwards and both the title and subtitle tell us what the book is about. Should we be afraid of our government?

Well, I would guess most are not afraid of all government. The National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control, and indeed most agencies do not put fear into most of us. But there are parts we fear. The IRS may come to mind.
