Masks Matter
Despite the rising death toll in Georgia the governor is doubling down on his previous policies of laxity and not allowing localities to be stricter in trying to limit deaths from COVID-19.

As a retired CDC employee and scientist I read the recent perspective in the Washington Post by 4 former directors of that public health agency.
It starts like this:

OK, a bit ambiguous there, Poor President Trump could mean he is just a victim of events or it could mean he is doing a poor job as president. The poor job is the one I am thinking of.
Looking back over the past 4 years or so, I do not notice very many nice things. Check out my archives of Trump or Trump-related posts: https://www.jackreidy.com/blog/tag/donald-trump/

President Donald Trump has completely failed in his response to the COVID-19 pandemic. When I wrote that late in May, I said:

President Trump thinks we are in a good place regarding the pandemic. He would like schools to open in the fall. Of course most parents would like that too. And doctors and teachers agree. However all of those groups would like our schools to be safe when they open. The lives of children should be a top priority.
President Trump is pushing an opening. He will pressure governors. He has threatened to deny federal aid to those areas not fully opening. He is pressuring CDC to water-down guidelines. School safety seems less important. Has he learned anything as a cornavirus spreads in states that have reopened before they were ready?

President Trump suggesting an unproven cure for Covid-19 asked “What do you have to lose?”. Candidate Donald Trump put it a bit more colorfully when he asked black voters, and maybe by extension all of us, “What the hell do you have to lose?”
Now about 3 and a half years into the Trump Presidency we know at least part of the answer.

Wearing a mask or not should not be a political statement. Masks are commonsense public health methods to stop the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19. You should wearing a mask when in public both to protect yourself and those you come in contact with.

The DOW is down over 1800 points today (June 11 2020). I suspect the Trump administration will again become a bit concerned about COVID-19. It does not seem to bother them that millions are unemployed and a hundred thousand Americans are dead. But a fall in the the stock market might get their attention.
Do you think they might actually try to do something about the pandemic ?
President Trump fails us in so many ways.
Millions are unemployed and a hundred thousand Americans are dead. It did not have to be this bad but President Trump’s months of magical thinking that the COVID-19 pandemic would just go away have led to over 100,000 American deaths and a Great Depression style economy.

The COVID-19 crisis and its solution will involve societal measures as well as biomedical sciences. The latest edition of Scientific American (June 2020) has a section with several very informative articles on the coronavirus pandemic.
It is well worth reading if you have an interest in the science research in seeking a vaccine and improving treatments. There is also an article on how this paper on the longer-term consequences of this and several other article on interest.
Many of their articles on their website at https://www.scientificamerican.com/.
His months of magical thinking on COVID-19 is the most obvious example. This continues to cause loss of life and massive economic problems. President Trump continues to fail us in many ways.

President Trump has continued his purge of Inspector Generals (IGs) who seem willing to investigate wrongdoing in his administration. State Department Inspector General Steve Linick is the 4th Inspector General fired in recent weeks.
The latest seems to have been related to an investigation into Mike Pompeo.

Another one by a Trump is in the running for worst prediction of year.
Even though we are less than half way though this year, I thought Present Trump would be the likely winner with his February statement about getting close to zero coronavirus cases within a couple of days. It seemed an obvious winner when we are closer to 1.5 million cases of coronavirus and over 88,000 deaths.

I had written earlier about the armed protests against state decisions on stay-at-home orders and shutdown of non-essential business.
I just read an interesting article on this in The Atlantic online. It is not a very long article and is well worth your time if you have any interest.
Why is this allowed? Protests against state order to stay-at-home or a lockdown are being protested in many states. Of course protest is our right and a good thing when the people disagree with the government. But if is accompanied by heavy enough arms to terrify other citizens, is it a good thing?
