I find that I rarely agree with Senator Mitch McConnell. He recently said: “What works is when the majority accepts reality.” And I agree with that. Unfortunately the minority or at least part of it must also accept reality or we will have a badly divided government that cannot govern the country. Ideally both sides need to accept reality.
The situation in the Senate is particular bad because of the filibuster and the current division in the Senate. If 100% of the Democrats accept the reality that bills should be paid, they can still be blocked unless at least 20% of Republicans must also accept that reality. Unfortunately Senator McConnell with not let any Republican accept reality and allow a vote on raising or suspending the debt ceiling.
So the minority can refuse to accept reality and cause an unprecedented and catastrophic crisis.
So it seems important at this point that we abolish the filibuster and allow the majority to control the Senate.
In the longer term we should consider electing those who accept reality. In one party that seems close to 100%. In the other it may be closer to 0%. So the better choice seems pretty obvious.
