The Republican party was once an important part of our democracy. Now it is just a disgrace. There are some Republicans who still believe in the principals that made the party great but much of the party disgraces our county.
On January 6, 2021 the United States Capitol was attacked by an angry mob. This act of domestic terrorism was certainly a threat to our democracy. We need to understand how and why this attack on the United States Capitol occurred and find ways to prevent future attacks.
H.R.3233 a bill to establish a bipartisan National Commission to Investigate the January 6 Attack on the United States Capitol passed the House with some Republican support. Specifically in the House, 35 Republicans voted the bill and 175 opposed it.
In the Senate there seems to be a little support but not enough to overcome a filibuster by the vast majority of Republican Senators.
Republicans should be embarrassed. Republicans again disgrace the United States.
There are other investigations but none would have as much impact as a truly bipartisan commission. Since most current Republicans in Congress do not seem to be interested, perhaps a bipartisan committee with the minority of Republican politicians with an interest or some Republicans who would like to save the party from its current problems would serve.
I have no doubts that many of the current Republican politicians will again disgrace the United States, but hope better days are ahead.
