We are talking about President Trump’s politics and and how that relates to the large number of deaths due to his failed response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

I do not think President Trump was not responsible for the virus coming here. But he is responsible for the large number of deaths that resulted from his incompetence and lies about the problem to the American people.

I guess it is time for my “Science Matters” mask, Since I think science really does matter and we should follow the public heath advice to wear masks in public. This is a public health matter not a political statement.

I spent 30 years and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and was always impressed by its ability to provide officials with the best advice on public health based on science.

This advice was not always appreciated by politicians. The advice on AIDS would be a good example. But I never heard any claims of political interference in this important mission until this administration. I should say at this point that I did not work in an area where I was directly involved in giving this advice and I have been retired for years.

Therefore it bothered me greatly to read about political interference with CDC by the Trump administration. We saw some of this over the last several months in pressure on CDC to revise school reopening guidelines and the reopening of businesses within a state.

We’ve also seen political operatives trying to dictate what Dr. Fauci tells the public about this pandemic. Once again, the Trump administration tries to keep good advice from the public and replace it with their political agenda.

Remember, it didn’t have to be this bad. I think it is safe to say, we should just ignore President Trump on matters of the COVID-19 pandemic and follow the science and the advice of the real public health experts when it come to recovering from this pandemic.
