Food for the living

Thanks to our President and his mismanagement of the COVID-19 crisis millions of Americans are in great financial difficulty and quite often do not even have food to eat. In addition there are over 150,000 of us dead. I’ll not speak about them today, the hungry living will be my topic – Food for the Living.

As I’ve often mentioned: It did not have to be this bad.

President Trump has failed us.

A relief plan (the CARES act) was passed several months back. It was fairly clear that the COVID-19 crisis would not be over by the time a temporary benefit to the unemployed would expire at the end of July. The House passed a bill to extend these benefits and address many other problems over 2 months ago.

The Senate Republicans seemed to have their own ideas. But rather than try to work with the House bill and try to find a solutions acceptable to both sides, they just delayed and did not make any progress. They could not even agree among themselves how to address this crisis. Then after not even attempting a solution until just before benefits expired, they decided to leave town for a long weekend.

Perhaps the only answer to this crisis which just seems to be getting worse in to vote out President Trump and those Republicans up for election this year.

But I digress. My original purpose to encourage others to do what I have done to try to alleviate to hunger problem. I have contributed to Feeding Amercica several times in the past few months and again today.

Hunger in America

Millions of children and families living in America face hunger and food insecurity every day.

  • Due to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, more than 54 million people may experience food insecurity in 2020, including a potential 18 million children.
  • According to the USDA’s latest Household Food Insecurity in the United States report, more than 37 million people in the United States struggled with hunger in 2018.
  • In 2018, 14.3 million American households were food insecure with limited or uncertain access to enough food.
Households with children are more likely to experience food insecurity. In 2018, more than 11 million children live in food-insecure households.
  • Every community in the country is home to families who struggle with food insecurity including rural and suburban communities.
  • Many households that experience food insecurity do not qualify for federal nutrition programs and need to rely on their local food banks and other hunger relief organizations for support.

Hunger has been a problem in America. It was a serious problem before. Now the problem is much larger. Catastrophe might be the right word.

Feeding America works with a nationwide group of food banks so a contribution can help where the need is greatest. Many local food banks also do good work in their areas. Either way, please help if you can.
