A bit over 2 months ago the House passed their corona virus relief bill (H.R.6800 – The Heroes Act) It was passed May 15, 2020 to help our county beyond the action taken earlier. This post specifically the unemployment benefits to help people when have lost the jobs in the Trump-Covid economy which are set to empire at the end of July.
Of course the Senate Republicans have done next to nothing since May 15 to address this problem. Except the occasional complaint about unemployment benefits being too high.
Now just a few days before the benefits expire they are starting to address this issue, by proposing cutting the federal supplement to state unemployment from $600 to $200 per week. And after the states are able to do it, set the federal supplement so that your total benefit is 70% of wages when working.
This means if you make $25,000 per year and lose your job, total unemployment will be $17,500 per year or about $337 per week. If you make $200,000 per year and lose your job, total unemployment will be $140,000 per year or about $2692 per week.
There could be action action in this area but this is how it stands now.
This may be saving the government money if there are fewer well-paid folks than people at the lower end, but seems rather unfair to me. But then Republicans seem to prefer help the rich to helping regulars folks.
