This is the third book about reporter Jack McEvoy. I first encountered Jack in The Poet many years ago. It was a very good book as I recall. He had a second book on Jack McEvoy called The Scarecrow but I didn’t read that one. When I saw there was a third book I decided it was time to revisit Jack, the reporter, and Rachel, the former FBI agent who lost her job with the FBI because of Jack.
The story starts with a murder. Then re-introduces Jack who is now working for a news website called Fair Warning that puts an emphasis on consumer protection. The Jack becomes a person of interest or perhaps a suspect in that murder. Rachel also becomes part of the story.
The story is fast paced as usual with Michael Connelly. Jack quickly discovers that the murder is not an isolated event and that a serial killer is involved. Again Jack’s beat becomes murder. I’ll not go into much more about the story since a large part of the enjoyment in reading these mysteries is the unexpected twists in the story and I don’t like any spoilers.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and think most readers will too, especially fans of Michael Connelly. I noticed that in some reviews there was a mention of Michael Connelly bringing political views into the story which was somehow offensive and ruined the story. Some reviews were a bit unclear on this and seemed to say this book was part of the plot to remove Trump and support various hoaxes.
I do not agree with these reviews. I thought the part of the book that touched on government and the media were very appropriate. I don’t recall any other political statements but have no problem with characters expressing political views, whether or not I agree with those views as long as it is relevant to the story.
I read a copy from the public library. I include an Amazon link above for several reason. One is I get a small commission if you use it to buy. But the most important could be it gives you any easy way to access the reviews on Amazon and get a variety of opinions. A third is it may make this review a little more visually appealing.
