Several month ago I addressed the question Should we abolish the Electoral College?. I think it an important question. I gave my opinion and what I saw as arguments on both sides and thought we should talk about it.
I thought a good place for debate might be Congress and resolutions pending before both houses of Congress might be a start for the debate. In both the Senate and House the bills have been referred to committees or subcommittees but as far as I can tell there has been no debate or hearings.
In the Senate there are 2 bills are: S.J. Res.17 introduced by Senator Brian Shatz and S.J. Res.16 introduced by Senator Jeff Merkley. S.J. Res.16 was introduced on March 28 and referred to the Committee on the Judiciary. S.J. Res.17 was introduced and April 2 and referred to the Committee on the Judiciary. There seems to have been no action on either since then.
In the House there is H.J.Res.7 introduced on January 3 by Rep. Steven Cohen. It has sat in the Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties since that date.
So far Congress does not seem to be acting on this but some state governments are are trying to work around the Electoral College to have the popular vote winner elected President.
