Broken Ground by Val McDermid is a great Scottish crime mystery. This book came out last year but my favorite librarian suggested it to me few months ago. This is a wonderful book and I completely enjoyed it .
This is the 5th and latest in the Karen Pirie Mystery Series. It was a new series for me so I can say for certain that you do not need to read this series in order. I started with number 5 and did not feel lost in the least. But I was curious about the characters and want to learn more.
Now I am going back and starting with the first in the series.
I do like a good crime mystery and was planning a trip to Scotland so this seemed like a good book to read. I’m glad I had found it. As it turned out part of the action took place in an area I would visit.
DCI Karen Pirie heads a historic case unit. We Americans would call it cold cases. Which reminds me that since it is a Scottish book and Scottish word which are probably not familiar to most Americans occasionally turn up, it is a good idea to keep the internet handy.
When reading a physical book I like to sit in a comfortable chair and keep my iPad handy. If reading an electronic copy on my Kindle it is even easier to look things up. Whichever way you prefer, Broken Ground is too good to miss. Based on my limited experience and her reputation, I suspect that I will enjoy more books by Val McDermid.
