Senator Chuck Grassley seems to be a hypocrite on the subject of guns for the mentally ill.  After the recent tragic school shooing in Florida, he was asked to comment and Senator Grassley said:

It seems to be common for a lot of these shootings, in fact almost all of the shootings, is the mental state of the people. And we have not done a very good job of making sure that people that have mental reasons for not being able to handle a gun getting their name into the FBI files and we need to concentrate on that.

Senator Chuck Grassley was the Senate sponsor of a resolution to prevent the Social Security Administration from informing the FBI background check firearms database.

This was combined with a House resolution and became law after a mostly party line vote and President Trump’s signature. The last link has links to the votes of both Senators and Representaives.

Perhaps Senator Grassley’s efforts to prevent this improvement in background checks is one of the reasons we haven’t done a very good job of keeping guns out of the hands of the mentally ill.

There is no evidence that it would have made a difference in the recent shooting in Florida but I think this clearly shows Senator Grassley hypocricy on the subject of guns for the mentally ill.
