Near the end of my post for yesterday on the Battle of Moore’s Creek Bridge I cited a book called Scottish Military Disasters by Paul Cowan. I had read the chapter on the battle and the role of Flora MacDonald. It did seem rather an unlikely coincidence but it appears to be true.
Anyway I liked what I had read and that evening starting looking around to see if I could find more about the book. Well, learning about the book Scottish Military Disasters was my starting point. I learned a bit that was expected and some that was totally unexpected.
I had known what I had found on the link to the scanned Google book cited in my last post. Of course my focus at the time was the the Battle of Moore’s Creek Bridge and the role of Flora MacDonald. But I noticed at least 2 other chapters on the American Revolution (Cowpens and the Boston Tea Party) and many other chapters on various military events around the world. I also noted that Google would sell a copy.
I also checked Amazon and see they have both Kindle and paperback editions available. The author also has an Amazon page where I read a bit about him.
What I did not expect was that he would have a webpage: http://scottishmilitarydisasters.com/. I don’t know why that was a surprise. any authors today have one. Perhaps the surprise was the content of the site. The webpage is interesting for several reasons.
There is a section on Scottish regiments and their tartans. This may be of use to genealogists or those with an interest in Scottish history or military. Or perhaps just those who are trying to identify an old photo.
There is also an author blog, more on his books, some supplemental materials that did not make it into the printed books (mainly maps), links to various publishers, etc. It is well worth having a look.
Thanks for your kind words about scottishmilitarydisasters.com. I’m glad you found it interesting.
You’re welcome. It was a good book and a good website. I hope at least a few people read this and it generated a little interest in both.
