I get a weekly newsletter from U.S. Senator Pat Toomey (R-PA). I don’t often agree with Senator Toomey but I try to keep informed and listen to both sides of the issue. I also occasionally share my opinions with him and I’m sure he is grateful.
In last week’s newsletter he highlighted his stance for expanding gun background checks (see Senator Toomey and a sensible gun law). But he did not mention another gun-related vote on the same day. Funny, Senator Toomey didn’t mention that. Both items were proposed amendments to H.R. 3762 (Restoring Americans’ Healthcare Freedom Reconciliation Act of 2015).
Senator Pat Toomey opposed a measure proposed by Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) to allow 72-hour delay for individuals on the terror watch list seeking to purchase a gun. Presumably this time would allow a more in-depth background check in such cases. It was not memtioned in the newsletter and I did not see it on his website either.
I think it unlikely Senator Toomey favors arming terrorists. I would like to know why he thought adding expanded background checks to a budget reconciliation bill on ObamaCare was appropriate but allowing extra time to complete background check on suspected terrorists was not. Senator Toomey didn’t mention that or explain his stance.
