Before getting to the shipwreck off Ireland, let me tell you where I read about it. After all the shipwreck is old news and there’s no rush in getting to the story.
I live just outside West Chester, PA and I signed up for emails from a downtown West Chester business association. Even retired guys try to keep up with what is happening locally.
To my surprise, in the last few days I’ve gotten 2 emails touching on historical events with an Irish connection. The first was about Wolfe Tone, the Irish revolutionary, and the second about William Everhart, a West Chester merchant .
Of course the article was mostly about his business career and contributions to West Chester but part was about a business trip that turned into a disaster when the ship carrying Mr. Everhart wrecked off the coast of Ireland.
I enjoyed the entire article but I thought you might be especially interested in the part about the shipwreck off Ireland. To be more specific, the storm first hit near Cape Clear, Cork on the afternoon of April 21, 1822 and on April 22 the damaged boat was driven into Garretstown bay near the Old Head at Kinsale.
Because of my interest in genealogy, I was particularly happy to see a transcription of a newspaper article form the Rootsweb archives. The Rootsweb article includes many surnames and theses may be of interest to other genealogists.
