I mentioned before that I am a big fan of volunteer indexing. Family search has has millions of genealogy records free. Yes, free and millions is an understatement. They say it is actually over a billion.
If you’ve been doing genealogy for anytime that is probably not a surprise but if you are not aware be sure to check out https://familysearch.org/.
Big numbers of records are nice and having them indexed makes them easily accessible online. And each of us can play a role in keeping these records freely available. Family search is seeking volunteers to help index these records which makes this free resource all the more valuable.
There is several reasons to do this.
The main one I think is to just do the right thing. If you use a free resource, it is just right that you help improve or maintain that resource if you can. You can volunteer to help where help is needed most.
Or since help is needed in many places, you can volunteer your help with records in an area of your interest. This might seem a bit selfish in that you might end up indexing some record that help you. But it is also helpful to the general community of genealogists. And someone with an interest in an area might actually be a better indexer because of some knowledge of that area.
And then there is this – Just in case you need another reason…
Do good and enjoy.
