The latest scandal involving Governor Christie, George Washington Bridge traffic and The Port Authority of NY and NJ (aka Bridgegate or Bridgeghazi) raises several questions. Although the current focus is on whether Gov. Christie either knew or ordered the political traffic problems in Fort Lee, let me pose a few more.
See http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/emails-link-chris-christie-aides-bridge-lane-closures-article-1.1569740 if you haven’t read enough about this lately.
How can 1 or 2 political appointees to a Board of 12 for the Port Authority of NY and NJ shut down several lanes on an important bridge approach? The Port Authority of NY and NJ is a very big organization controlling airports, rail, tunnels, bridges, marine terminals and ports, the Port Authority Bus Terminal, the World Trade Center, and more. Given the importance of this organization, should better controls be in place?
Why would this political appointee to of the Port Authority follow the orders of Christie’s deputy chief of staff unless he had reason to believe that she spoke for the Governor?
Don’t appointees to the Board of the Port Authority have a primary duty to the Port Authority? Or should their primary duty political mischief for those who did the appointing?
If Governor Christie didn’t know (or worse), should he have known? This seems like a case of either being guilty or incompetent.
In his apology, he cited the large number of NJ state workers and said he could not know about the actions of them all. But we are not talking about a rogue state worker, we are talking about his immediate staff.
