Since I seem to be pointing out articles I really liked here is another. It is What’s the matter with motherhood? by E.J. Dionne, Jr and starts like this:
If you’re a conservative strongly opposed to abortion, shouldn’t you want to give all the help you can to women who want to bring their children into the world? In particular, wouldn’t you hope they’d get the proper medical attention during and after their pregnancy?
And ends like this:
If health coverage — yes, including maternity care — isn’t a right-to-life issue, I don’t know what is.
Makes you think about the issues. Definitely worth a read.
And wouldn’t it also be wonderful if a woman, prior to getting pregnant, counted the cost of her actions and understood that she had adequate insurance coverage to cover her maternity care? That’s called acting responsibly. It shows individual planning and that the result of your personal actions are to be borne by you – not society in general. No one “owes” you for your the result of your irresponsible personal activity. Think before you act.
In my opinion, abortion is definitely not an acceptable solution to end an unwanted pregnancy.
Hi Bill,
As I see it, the ACA is relatively neutral on abortion coverage. Plans may cover it or not. And also coverage of abortion is subject to state laws and regulation. I think that is probably the right way to handle things since public opinion is so divided on the issue.
I think the point of the article was that – if you are against abortion, it is logically inconsistent to oppose inclusion of maternity benefits in policies under the ACA. I think he is right but I’m sure there are lots of folks who don’t agree.
And I don’t see the connection between some people acting irresponsibility and including maternity benefits in insurance.
