As I mentioned before, I’ve been filling in some details on close relations who are not direct ancestors. That is, collateral rather than lineal relationships. I’ve been looking into the John Greer and Julia Mary Hopkins family of New York City.
Their second child Letitia “Lottie” Greer very rarely used her actual first name. In fact the only record I’ve found so far with Letitia as her name is her marriage to John Heffernan on 24 January 1917. I found this record in a database of the German Genealogy Group.
The German Genealogy Group has a variety of resources. Most are for New York City and the surrounding areas but there are others. The page is worth checking out if you have an interest in genealogy. It is not confined to Germans either, so have a look. I should also mention that they are free to the general public.
So back to Lottie Greer. Another variant that was sometime used is Letta but mostly, she is Lottie.
In the 1915 NY Census she is living at home but is surnamed Dresher and has 2 children with her (Maria and Rita Dresher). I have no idea what happened to Mr. Dresher.
Then in the 1920 census she is married to John Heffernan and they have a daughter Francis. There is a Rita Heffernan who may be an adopted Rita Dresher. And Mary Drescher completes the household and may be Maria Dresher.
Of course, it was this data from the census that that narrowed down the time window to 1915-1920, made me think she stayed in New York City and was likely to have married there, and told me her husband’s name.
Since these records are handwritten or transcribed, the names may not be exactly right. For example, Dresher and Drescher are seen as are Heffernan and Hefferman.
