Kavanaugh hearings: what are they afraid of?

The Senate Republicans seem to be in a big rush to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. They want the Kavanaugh hearings to proceed to a vote as soon as possible.

So quickly they do not have time to let the Democrats see 90% of the relevant documents.

So quickly we will not hear more about his years in the Bush administration and possible perjury before the Senate.

So quickly they rather not let the FBI investigate an attempted rape he has been accused of.

Presumably this rush will result in a party-line vote that they hope will confirm Judge Kavanaugh.

These hearings are supposed to be a time to allow Senators to see and hear all relevant evidence before confirming a nominee to a lifetime appoint to our Supreme Court. The Kavanaugh hearings do not seem to be working that way.

I have written before about the lack of documents. I don’t think the situation has improved much since then. In the words of Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) “What is the rush? What are we afraid of?”

Even in the small sample to documents which Republican supplied, there was evidence that Kavanaugh lied to the Senate Judiciary Committee during the 2004 and 2006 hearings regarding his nomination to the U.S. Court of Appeals. Should this be investigated further? Should all relevant documents be made available to the FBI.

Then a few days ago there was a accusation of sexual assault by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford. It seems reasonable to delay a few days while the FBI re-opens its background check in light in the new information. This is what she asked for. And what the Republicans refuse to do. Who sounds more credible to you?

But Republicans are in a rush. What are they afraid of? Let the Kavanaugh hearings proceed quickly. Don’t wait for the evidence, just vote to confirm.
