The news about the Trump administration brings Richard Nixon to mind. I am wondering if news on Russian influence could lead us to something even bigger than Watergate.
I don’t think is reasonable to expect Republicans to investigate Republicans and do much of a job. You can see all the party-line votes occuring in Congress in the past weeks.
I think any investigation should be nonpartisan and independent as much as feasible. Possible models would be the independent prosecutor in Watergate or the 9-11 Commission.
There is just too much at stake to allow a partisan whitewash. Our intelligence community believes that Russia intervened in our election and favored Donald Trump, The New York Times reports that the Trump’s campaign and other Trump associates had repeated contacts with senior Russian intelligence officials in the year before the election, the Washington Post indicates that various parts of the Times story are confirmed by various news organizations, several agencies are investigating ties with russia, and President Trump himself as repeatedly expressed admiration for Mr. Putin.
Yes, it could be bigger that Watergate. Time to start that independent investigation, I think.
