Before I retired I lived in Georgia for 30 years. For part of that time Georgia was a solid democratic state. Of course, this was a long time ago. The state seemed to have an abundance of Yellow Dog Democrats. That is, Democrats who would vote for a yellow dog if nominated by the Democrats over any candidate nominated by the Republicans.
So solid was Democratic Georgia that Republicans quite often didn’t even put-up an opposition candidate for many offices. The real decision was reached in the Democratic primary.
Now it seems we have Yellow Dog Republicans as well. An interview with Jeb Bush comes to mind but I believe all the Republican candidates for President have said something similar. I don’t recall the exact words but Jeb! said that he would support the candidate nominated by the Republicans for President. Of course, at the time he hoped to be that candidate.
I was disappointed but not surprised. There is just too much yellow dog-ism around today. I think it would be more reasonable to say something like “I expect I will support the candidate of my party but my final decision will depend on the candidates running for President.”
It seems very unlikely that either party will nominate a yellow dog. But what would anyone of sound mind commit to blindly supporting the candidate of either party no matter who or what. Yellow Dog or not.
There are some who evaluate the candidates and pick the best choice. Or in many cases, it is a choice of the least bad candidate. So now many of us allow political parties to think for us and determine our actions and who we will vote for. Don’t be a Yellow Dog Democrat or Yellow Dog Republican.
